Filtering and Cross-Filtering

Filtering and Cross-Filtering

Podium dashboards will default to the most recent and high-level information that you can access, and empowers you to be able to drill-down and filter the data to explore and answer your questions. This module will detail the two main mechanisms of exploration: filtering and cross-filtering.

Filtering

On the left-side of your screen, there is a filter panel. These panels will always list the school year, district name, and school name selections. Beneath those additional filters tailored to the specific data type will then be available (exit date, entry date), and then the student groups. From top-to-bottom, the values available in a filter rely on the selections above. A filter with a red star is required to have a selection.

You can select the drop down arrow to learn about the available options. You can also use the search bar to look for specific values.

You must hit Apply Filters in order to have your selections apply to the dashboard. When you have non-applied selections, the Apply filters button will be blue.

Apply filters

Not all filters apply to all charts. For example, the school year filter will not apply to a cross-year chart. You can see what filters are applied to a chart by hovering above the number on the chart.

Once you have your filters applied, we strongly recommend you minimize the filter bar in order to maximize the space for the charts. You do that by clicking on the area on the top right side of the filter bar.

Cross Filtering

In addition to using the filter bar, you can interact directly with visuals on the dashboard to apply filters. For example, selecting a cell in a table or a bar in a chart will filter the other visuals to match that value. In the example below, the user has selected 9th grade, and the other charts update accordingly to reflect data for that grade. The selected bar or cell will be highlighted, and a small icon will appear to indicate that cross-filtering is active.

Only one cross-filter can be applied at a time, and it can be used in combination with standard filters. This feature allows you to quickly drill down into specific metrics or categories—for instance, identifying which students are included in a particular group.
